Podcast Guest “It's a long road” is the triathlete Tasos Stathopoulos. Tassos Stathopoulos was born in Piraeus in 1952 and was a Craftsman Furniture Maker by profession. From an early age he was involved in classical sports and at the age of 27 he ran his first marathon. Since then in the following years he combined family – work and long endurance races.

 

Globally in his age category (despite his minor disabilities) he ranks in the top ten with hundreds of thousands of kilometers in swimming-cycling-running-mountain climbing.

He traveled to 42 countries, in 25 of which he competed in complex and individual competitions, having many distinctions to his credit.

In total, he has finishes in 46 Marathons, in long-distance races as well as participation in the 1998 Spartanathlon.

In cycling he competed in 2000 and 2004 in the Zurich-Athens international cycling test crossings of 2,650 km over 13 days, with an average of 204 km per day. In 2003, he cycled the 1,250 km NOSTOP Paris-Brest-Paris in 72 hours. In Greece he has cycled around the Peloponnese 1,000 km, twice the 600 km Eleusis - Olympia - Eleusis, 3 times the 400 km and 13 cycling Spartakiads of veteran athletes 265 km Athens - Sparta.

He competed in triathlons for the first time in 1995 in the Pan-Hellenic Olympic distance championship in Varkiza, winning the 2nd Pan-Hellenic place in the veteran category.

In FULL IRON-MAN races he has a total of 8 finishes with 1st in 2002 in ALMERE, Netherlands at the age of 50, 2nd in 2005 in Switzerland, 3rd in Lanzarote in Spain, 4th in South Africa in Porto Elizabeth in 2009, 5th in Italy on the island Elda in 2011, 6th in Roth in Germany, 7th in Cervia in Italy and 8th at age 70 in 2021 in Tallinn in Estonia. Best time in Germany with 13 hours and three minutes where he competed for charity with the FLOGAS jersey.

He also has climbs like in the Himalayas Anapurna pass at 5,250m, in Morocco, in the Carpathians in Romania, several Greek peaks with that of Olympus 2,917m 6 times.

With an honorary license from the Ministry of Education, he selflessly taught from 2008-2018 in the school communities "lifelong sports with healthy competition", "family sports", "marathon road" and the "triathlon" competition.

We will have an interesting discussion with Tasos Stathopoulos after we will talk about moments of his rich sports career, what gives him the will and strength to continue to be at the forefront, about his book entitled "In the unexplored havens of endurance ”, ultra-distances and what made him always push himself beyond the limits, as well as other equally interesting topics that concern all amateur runners.
